India vs South Africa down memory lane

Mike Denness affair

When India toured South Africa in 2001, the match referee Mike Denness had alleged Indian players guilty for tampering the ball and excessive appealing in the 2nd test. The cricket board of India had protested and made sure that the players don’t get a match suspension.

ICC had banned opening batsman Virender Sehwag for one match and overturned the decision to ban the remaining five players.

The third test in that series was deemed as unofficial by ICC and therefore South Africa had won that series 1-0.

Dangerous Wanderers pitch in 2018

In the Gandhi-Mandela series, during the 3rd test match at Wanderers, South Africa the pitch had changed drastically from the 2nd day. There was excessive seam and unpredictable bounce on the pitch. It was deteriorating very quickly, hence making batting even more tough and hazardous. Batsmen of both the teams got hit on the helmet, chest and other body parts which caused medical staff of both the teams to come more frequently to treat them.

Along with the pitch curators, the on-field umpires were also responsible for the player’s safety. ICC had rated the pitch as poor with 3 demerit points.

India was in a strong position to win that test, but the pitch was testing the Indian batsmen. After debating day three of the test match, the match was continued on day 4 and in the end India won the match by 63 runs.
