How does the IPL Points Table 2023 work?

The IPL points table 2023 shows current IPL standings with updated IPL team rankings for all eight teams. The team with most number of win and points are placed on top of the table. All 10 teams play a total of 14 matches each at the group stage and four of these teams advance to the play-offs stage where they play the qualifiers, eliminator and the finals match.

Each team is awarded 2 points for a win. In case of no-result and a tie situation, both teams get 1 point each. After 14 matches, top 4 teams qualify for the play-offs and finals. In case of 2 or more teams having equal points, a team with better net run-rate gets higher position on the table.

With additional teams, the number of matches being played for each team will change but the playoffs qualification remains the same. Top 4 teams on the points table, out of 10, will continue to proceed to the play-offs.

FAQs – IPL Points Table

What is IPL points table?

The IPL points table lists the current standings of all participating teams based on their wins and losses. Each of the 10 teams play 14 matches during the group stage. Top four of the ten teams at the end of the tournament proceed to the play-off stage.

How many points are earned for each win?

Each team is awarded 2 points for each win. There is only 1 point in case of no-result or a tie. No points are awarded if the match is called-off or cancelled.

What happens when teams have equal points?

Interestingly, this has happened many times when 2 or more teams end up with equal number of wins, losses or tied matches. This results in teams having equal points on the table. In such cases, teams can qualify for play-offs based on the net run rate.

What does the points table of IPL show?

The IPL points table highlights all the teams participating along with total matches played, matches won, lost, total points and the net run rate.

How important is the Net run rate on the table?

In the beginning of the league, less importance is given to the net run rate since teams are ranked simply on the basis of points.  The importance of the net run rate arises when all teams complete their fourteen matches. If 2 or more teams have equal points, the decision whether they will proceed to the play-offs is solely based on the final net run rate position.
